1. The fifth person received half of the number of flowers received to the fourth person.

P_{5} = ½(P_{4})

=> P_{4} = 2P_{5}

If the fifth person received only one flower and there is no flower remaining in the basket.

So, P_{5 }= 1

P_{4} = 2P_{5}

=> P_{4} = 2 × 1

=> P_{4} = 2

2. The fourth person received half of the number of flowers received to the third person

P_{4} = ½(P_{3})

=> P_{3} = 2P_{4}

=> P_{3} = 2 × 2 (As, P_{4} = 2)

=> P_{3} = 4

3. The third person received half of the number of flowers received to the second person.

P_{3} = ½(P_{2})

=> P_{2} = 2P_{3}

=> P_{2} = 2 × 4 (As, P_{3} = 4)

=> P_{2} = 8

4. There are flowers in a basket which are to be distributed to five persons standing in a row. The second person received half of the number of flowers given to the first person.

P_{2} = ½(P_{1})

=> P_{1} = 2P_{2}

=> P_{1} = 2 × 8 (As, P_{2} = 4)

=> P_{1} = 16

So, total number of flowers in the basket = P_{1 }+ P_{2 }+ P_{3 }+ P_{4 }+ P_{5 }

= 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1

= 31

Hence, ‘31’ is the correct answer.
